The Human Body

The human body is the entire structure of a human being and is composed of many different types of Cells that come together to form Tissues and ultimately also unite in the right combination and composition to form Organs. The organs ultimately combine to form the giant main structure of the body called Systems.

The systems ensure the smooth running and functioning of the body. It is a complex structure and the entire human body makes for a complex gigantic machine.

The human body comprises of the following:

  • Head
  • Neck
  • Main body also called the trunk as it houses/encompasses the thorax and the abdomen.
  • Arms
  • Hands with nails
  • Legs
  • Feet with toe nails

The study of the human body is divided into the following:

  • Anatomy

The study of the human form and structure, the different parts and their organization and the situation.

  • Physiology

The study of the functions and the activities of the human body as it is divided and differentiated into systems, organs, tissues and cells. It also involves the physical and chemical phenomena involved.

  • Histology

The study of the microscopic structure, chemical composition and the function of the tissues, or tissue system of the human body.

Many systems and mechanisms in the body interact in order to adjust its internal environment to maintain a stable equilibrium. Like the case of warm blooded animals being able to maintain a constant temperature.

This is also known as achieving a dynamic equilibrium or balance with safe levels of substances such as sugar and oxygen in the blood.

COMPOSITION

The Elements of the body

The Human body is composed of elements which reside in trillions of numbers inside the cells and non-cellular components of the body. They include:

  • Hydrogen
  • Calcium
  • Oxygen
  • Phosphorus
  • Carbon

The adult male body is 60% water and has a total water content of 42 litres made up of 19 litres of extracellular, 3.2 litres blood plasma, 8.4 litres interstitial liquid and 23 litres of cell fluids.

The Parts constituting the Human body

  • Cells

The human body contains trillions of cells which are the primary and fundamental unit of all life forms. When matured they are approximately 37.2 trillion cells in the body comprising of the total numbers of cell types in organs, like the gastrointestinal tract, the skin and others.  Please note that not all parts of the body are made up of cells but generally cells abound in the extracellular matrix consisting of collagen – a protein surrounded by extracellular fluids.

  • Tissues

The body consists of numerous tissue types with specialized functions and the study of its functions is called histology – please refer to the classification above. You can stuy and view them with microscopes and there are four main types lining the cells:

  • Epithelia Tissues –

Made of layers of cells forming the covering of most internal and external surfaces of the body and organs like the gastrointestinal tract. Internally are the lining of the cells and other small cavities like the blood vessels and glands and are the endothelia Tissues and externally is the skin. They come in various and numerous shapes and forms.

  • Connective Tissue
  • Nervous Tissues
  • Muscle Tissues

The remaining are lining cells that aggregate to form tissues that regulate what can pass and what cannot pass through them thereby protecting the internal structures of the human body.

Organs

These are structured collections of multiple cells with specific functions within the human body. They include the followings:

  • The heart
  • The lung
  • The liver

They usually reside within cavities in the body like the abdomen and the pleura.
