Health and Disease

Health and Disease refer to a paradox of opposites, meaning you are one or the other. You are either in a healthy state or in a state of illness or disease.

A Healthy State:

A healthy state is actually difficult to define and It is relative and varies from one individual to the next all according to their perception relating to the following factors:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Social
  • Cultural

But generally speaking, the absence of good and health results in illnesses and diseases, disorders and malady, injury and malfunction of the body. All these produce signs and symptoms which can be seen, felt and experienced by a person and even during medical examination.

Health and Disease

Illnesses and diseases can be from either of two sources:
  1. Congenital – from birth
  2. Acquired – comes up later in life

Congenital diseases arise from birth as a result of malfunction of developing organs like heart, lungs, limbs and others. In some cases it arises as a result of what the expectant mother has been eating or taking which is assimilated by the embryo like:

  1. Alcohol
  2. Cigarette
  3. Prescription tablets

Acquired diseases as defined earlier can be acquired and may be contagious as they are usually caused by certain lifestyles:

  1. Diet
  2. Smoking
  3. Injury/Trauma
  4. Alcohol
  5. Environment

Health and disease are aspects of our lives that should be taken serious as they affect us daily.
